In Brief

July 25, 2007

Agora, a newsletter publishing company based in Baltimore, has found a novel way to encourage better lifestyle choices by its employees: a 12-week weight-loss contest. The reward: a $1,000 prize for the top “losers” in male, female and team categories.

By the time the contest ended Friday, 84 employees had shed nearly 1,000 pounds, with two losing more than 40 pounds each.
Fitness programs and weight-loss competitions such as Agora’s, which was inspired by the NBC show “The Biggest Loser,” are becoming more popular in offices, where workers are concerned about their waistlines and employers about health-care costs. The goals are to improve employee health, increase productivity, reduce absenteeism and lower costs.
“The concept is becoming more popular as workplaces realize the cost of an obese work force,” said Marci Campbell, an associate professor in the nutrition department at the University of Northern Carolina.
Agora spent $90,000 for the program, which was extended another 12 weeks. Employees can work with personal trainers during classes at the company’s gym or have unlimited access to a local gym.

More workers call EAPs about nonwork matters
The number of calls from workers turning to employee assistance programs and helplines for assistance with personal issues increased significantly in the first half of 2007, says a national EAP and helpline provider.
Bensinger, DuPont & Associates says it received 6,500 calls — a 74 percent increase — for short-term problem resolution in 2007, compared with the same time in 2006, according to a report Tuesday on the Web site of the Society of Human Resource Managers.
Bensinger, DuPont attributed the increase to the expanding scope of EAP services that provide confidential assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as well as employees’ increasing willingness to seek help

50 Million Pound Challenge Winning The Weight Loss War

July 21, 2007

A weight loss campaign called the 50 Million Pound Challenge is off to a good start just 14 weeks into its 14-city U. S. tour. Since it began in April, the program’s 170,000+ participants have shed a total of 375,000+ pounds.

The idea is the brainchild of Dr. Ian Smith, the author of best-seller “Extreme Fat Smash Diet”. The Challenge is an historic campaign & commitment by the African-American community to rally people across the U.S. to get fit & lose weight — and ultimately live longer, look & feel great.

The Challenge aims to reach its ambitious goal by making it easier for millions of people to get fit, lose weight and turn back the deadly toll of weight-related diseases that threaten half of all Americans. Each week 10,000 people die from illnesses related to inactivity and diet.

For 135 million Americans and two-thirds of U.S. adults who are overweight — double the rate a few decades ago — people’s lifestyle choices have become a matter of life and death. The African-American community has been particularly hard hit, losing too many loved ones to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer and related illnesses. Among African Americans, 80% of women and 67% of men face increased risk of deadly illnesses from excess weight.

Free Challenge kits are available from participating State Farm agent offices, with a CD and brochure from Dr. Ian with menu and fitness advice, and a pedometer to measure steps. Dr. Ian is working on The Challenge with State Farm, which is sponsoring the initiative as part of its long-time commitment to the African-American community and all communities.

“This campaign is ultimately about helping people live longer, more productive lives,” said Pam El, Vice President of Marketing for State Farm. “We care about the health of our communities. State Farm is proud to work with Dr. Ian on a campaign that can have such a positive impact on so many people’s lives.” Said Dr. Ian: “State Farm’s support and concern in this initiative has been outstanding. They really get it.”

“I need to do this in front of millions of people so I can’t mess up,” she said. According to her Jenny Craig blog – Bertinelli is the company’s current spokeswoman – she’s lost at least 23 lbs. so far.

With her Jenny Craig gig, Bertinelli took a step back into the media spotlight, but with her memoir, she says she’s not afraid of opening the door to her private life.

“I’ve grown up in and out of the public eye, survived some tough times, learned some important lessons, and come out – as has my entire family – in a great place,” she said in the statement.

She says, “I have honestly never dieted in my life. My parents and friends tell me that I have always looked the same since high school. But during (Ally McBeal), when we were filming and working so hard, I became stressed and did not eat as much as I should.

“I think, on a frame like mine, if I lose a few pounds, it makes a big difference. There was no anorexia or bulimia or any other such thing. I hated every bit of attention on my weight and size. Even now, I can’t put into words what exactly happened.”

Calista is currently enjoying renewed success in ‘Brothers and Sisters’, her most high-profile TV role since ‘Ally McBeal’.

“We are finding that inflammation of the fat tissue causes both diabetes and heart attacks,” said Dr. Christie Ballantyne, director of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at the Methodist DeBakey Heart Center. “This study will examine how diet, exercise and weight loss affect inflammation, and how these changes affect the health of the patient’s heart.”

The Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) study is a large multi-center trial designed to examine whether weight loss through intensive lifestyle intervention with diet and exercise will reduce cardiovascular events in obese diabetic individuals compared with a control group that receives diabetes support and education.

Previous studies showed that as people lost weight and maintained the loss, there was a decrease in inflammation.
